The COMPLETE Guide to Movie Ticket Prices in Singapore

Ah, going to the movies. Compared to many activities, movie ticket prices are still relatively inexpensive. But if you’re going as a family, the amount quickly adds up, depending on how many members there are in your family. And that’s not even counting popcorn and other food and drink concessions! No wonder Netflix is so popular — it’s less than $25 for a whole month, and they have lots of great shows.

BUT you know the problem with Netflix? It can’t let you watch Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness, or any other major blockbuster, when they first open in cinemas. You’ll have to wait for months, if not years, for those movies to appear on Netflix. (IF they even appear on Netflix — Disney, WarnerMedia and other media conglomerates already have their own streaming services, so you’ll have to subscribe to multiple streamers to enjoy shows from different movie studios.)

If you don’t mind waiting, that’s great! But if you absolutely *need* to watch a movie in the first week of its release, you’ll have to go to the cinema. (You can be a pirate, but not only is it illegal, the quality of the picture usually sucks in comparison, and the experience isn’t as great. Movies like the huge blockbusters that everyone is clamouring to watch were made for the big screen.)

I can’t help you with money woes, but I can help you break down each cinema’s ticket prices and promotions, and determine which one is the most inexpensive to go to on any given day.

Discounts by Cinema Chains in Singapore

There are 7 cinema chains in Singapore. (Click on each cinema on the list to jump to that section if you don’t want to scroll through the whole page.)

  2. Cathay Cineplexes
  3. Shaw Theatres
  4. Filmgarde Cineplexes
  5. WE Cinemas
  6. EagleWings Cinematics

The Projector is a small, specially curated cinema that mainly plays films that are foreign, cult favourites, classics, arthouse, horror, local flicks, retrospectives and special themed nights. The Projector also recently opened a unique bistro lounge/cinema concept at Clarke Quay called Projector X: Riverside. The bar atmosphere is kept intact in the big screen experience, and audio is played through wireless headphones.

  • Standard tickets: $13.50 (Mon-Thurs), $15 (Fri-Sun, Public Holidays & Eve of Public Holidays)

Summary of All Cinema Ticket Prices

If sifting through all the above movie ticket prices and figuring out which cinemas have the cheapest prices or give the best promotions is too complicated, no worries, I’m here for you!

Standard 2D Movie Ticket Prices

Here’s a summary of movie ticket prices across all cinemas throughout the week. Because some cinemas have premium formats that are exclusive to themselves, I am only comparing the prices for standard 2D movie tickets here.

Summary of standard 2D movie ticket prices across all cinemas in Singapore (as of 7 Apr 2022)
Summary of standard 2D movie ticket prices across all cinemas in Singapore (as of 7 Apr 2022)

As you can see, most cinemas have a similar pricing structure, and differ from each other at most by $2. The Projector’s prices are much different on weekdays, but that’s because they’re a specialised, independent cinema offering curated, arthouse movies that are not played in the other mainstream cineplexes.

You can choose to go to the cheapest cinema on the list, but honestly, the difference between the mainstream cinemas isn’t much. If there’s a GV nearer your house, I wouldn’t recommend that you purposely travel further just to take advantage of the cheaper prices at EagleWings. The extra transport fares will probably cost the amount that you were trying to save by going to the “cheaper” cinema.

Luxury Movie Experiences

Most cinemas also offer a luxury movie experience. These come with lounges for patrons to relax before the movie starts, recliner seats in the cinema halls (which have fewer seats and feel more exclusive), and concierge service where you can order better quality food, drinks and wine from your seat and dine in the cinema (aka a restaurant experience in a cinema).

Summary of luxury 2D movie ticket prices across all cinemas in Singapore (as of 7 Apr 2022)
Summary of luxury 2D movie ticket prices across all cinemas in Singapore (as of 7 Apr 2022)

The price differences among the various cinemas’ luxury offerings are more stark, but each offers a unique experience, so I can’t say they’re comparable based on price alone. (Except Gold Class Express at GV Funan. For a mere $3 difference, I really recommend that you go for the full-scale Gold Class experience instead. You’ll thank me.)

Plus, if you’re willing to pay a premium for a movie ticket, are you really looking to save money, or do you want to get the most out of your experience? Like restaurants, the cheapest may not be the best value for money. You’ll just have to try all of the luxury movie cinemas to see if their experiences are worth their prices.

Discounts by Concession Category and Card Promotions

In addition, each cinema offers concession prices and discounts for different credit cards or membership programmes. Below, I break down which cinemas offer the best prices for students and senior citizens, and which cards give you the best discounts.

  2. WE Cinemas: $4.50
  3. Cathay: $4 (Tues all day for Merdeka & Pioneer Generation card holders only), $5 (Mon-Fri before 6pm)
  4. GV: $5
  5. Filmgarde: $5
  6. EagleWings: $5.50
  7. The Projector: $11.50 (Mon-Thurs), $13 (Fri-Sun, Public Holidays & Eve of Public Holidays)

It’s great to be a movie lover above 55 years old. Especially one living near a Shaw cinema. But $5.50 isn’t too bad if you live near EagleWings at King Albert Park.

My conclusions after compiling this entire guide on movie ticket prices

  • It’s great to be a person above 55, or at the very least, a student.
  • If you’re not a student/senior citizen, have no credit cards whatsoever, and are not subscribed to anything mentioned above, go join the GV Movie Club — it’s free! — and catch movies on Mondays and Tuesdays for $2 off. You have to familiarise yourself with the T&Cs to prevent disappointment, but they have 14 locations, which makes it way more convenient.
    • But if you live near Clementi, join the WE Club instead. They have $1 off movie tickets everyday, and the T&Cs have less hoops to jump through.
  • SAFRA members enjoy the best deals at Shaw.
  • HomeTeamNS members should go to Cathay.
  • The credit card deals aren’t super great to be honest, so just pick the cinema which has discounts for the credit card you own.
  • EagleWings has the lowest weekend prices at $12.50.
  • Avoid Public Holidays and eve of Public Holidays at all costs!

Ultimately, I believe in doing what is convenient for you. Remember that the price differences among all the cinemas for regular tickets (without discounts) is $2 at most. Even with discounts, it’s less than $3 difference per ticket. If you’re an individual, don’t spend time and money travelling all the way to some godforsaken location when you live on the opposite end of the island — just to save $2! It’s not worth it. (Of course, if you’re a family of 10, that’s a different story. Or is it?)

This guide is SUPER long, but I hope you’ve found it extremely helpful!

P.S. I used to work at a cinema, even during my uni days, but that in no way affects my objectiveness in this post. Do what makes sense for you!
