Haven’t updated in a while, though it was not due to a lack of things to talk about. Life happened. As well as a certain re-obsession with The Avengers, especially when I discovered that there is a Marvel Cinematic Universe: Phase One – Avengers Assembled with all six movies in one limited edition collectible package just *waiting* to be owned. Naturally I bought it on the spot.
What makes The Avengers work so phenomenally, $1.5 billion-grossing well? Witty lines, perfect comedic timing, the genre, the star power, the star powers’ amazing dynamic, and a director who *is* his own target audience and therefore able to deliver beyond their expectations. It’s a movie for geeks, directed by the King Geek himself. I could ramble on and on about the ingenious lines (“Shakespeare in the Park? Doth Mother know you weareth her drapes?” and “He’s adopted” being my two favourites), the sight gags, the team dynamic, the unspoken tension (I’m dying to find out what exactly is going on between Hawkeye and Black Widow)…
I’ve even taken to reading fanfiction because I just can’t get enough of all of them. It’s been ruining my life with sleepless nights.
Booked my tickets for Iron Man 3 this Friday. Can’t wait, but at the same time, I’m afraid that it might not meet my expectations. For one thing, the rest of the Avengers aren’t there. I can’t imagine them not being there for each other now, and I don’t know where (or comprehend why) everyone else is gone while Tony Stark faces his demons. (I’m hoping for some welcome cameos, but each is supposed to sustain his own arc, so I highly doubt it.)
For another, Iron Man 2 performed under my expectations. I can’t remember exactly why, since it’s been almost three years since I saw it, but it had something to do with a draggy first and second act. And the fact that Stark wasn’t the only one who could put on the suit anymore, which diminished it slightly in my eyes. (A little unfair, I know, but I need my superheroes to be special. That’s why they are “super”.)
It so happens that the first trailer for Thor: The Dark World was just released a day ago. It certainly looks as dark as Phase Two seems to be heading towards (starting with the angst-filled Iron Man 3), but Chris Hemsworth has filled out his shoes with more noble bearing this time
